Addinsight was conceived to address a growing need for deeper insights into traffic data and movement patterns. Originally developed in 2011 as part of a major corridor planning study commissioned by South Australia’s Department for Infrastructure and Transport (DIT), the platform was built on a foundation of approximately 100 Bluetooth field devices and integrated with existing traffic signal data to support business case development and traffic modelling.
Over time, Addinsight evolved from a planning tool into a critical component of real-time traffic operations. Its adoption expanded rapidly, becoming an integral system for traffic management centres not only in South Australia but across every State and Territory in Australia, as well as select cities in New Zealand. The field network has since grown to more than 8,000 Bluetooth (Wireless Locators), covering the majority of urban arterial roads nationwide.
Recognising the platform’s growing significance and the need for ongoing support and expansion, DIT transferred ownership of the intellectual property to SAGE Group in 2021. This move was intended to provide the scale and investment required to extend Addinsight reach and capability. SAGE Automation—our sister company and one of the original hardware partners—played a key role in supporting Addinsight early growth and continues to drive innovation in transport and smart city technologies.
Today, Addinsight remains committed to its founding principles of openness, interoperability, and innovation. The platform continues to expand its functionality and compatibility, enabling a broader range of customers to harness its power for enhanced mobility, planning, and operations.
