Incident detection and congestion management

THE challenge

Incident detection and congestion management is critical for Traffic Management Centres (TMC’s). Congestion could be caused by a faulty SCATS detector, route pre-emption requests, or rerouted traffic from an incident in another location. On signalised corridors, stopped vehicles and delays are often expected, particularly during the peak periods. Addinsight incident detection capability considers this inherent variability to differentiate between recurring congestion and abnormal events. It learns to differentiate between day of the week, time of year, school and public holidays.

THE SOLUTION

The system only highlights locations that are experiencing unusual congestion, which occurs when the live travel time exceeds the expected travel time.

Recurring congestion is ignored, allowing operators within the traffic management centre to focus on unusual conditions.
Addinsight has two main user interfaces for managing and monitoring incidents. The primary tool used in traffic management centres is the Real Time Operations client.

The Value Created

Modern Traffic Management Centres have lots of information available to them. Addinsight presents only abnormal congestion, information that can be relied on and more importantly acted on. Coordination between TMC and field staff were able to locate trucks queuing at a CBD construction site. With this understanding they moved the truck wait zone to nearby location, removing the congestion while facilitating the activities of a modern city.
